It’s not Sirius’ greatest hour, and it’s all Remus’ fault. It’s not his greatest hour to be a best friend, he knows it but he can’t make himself be quiet. He sees James fallen from yet another of Lily’s rejections, sees the drowning in his eyes.
“I’ve been telling you for years, James. If Lily really wanted to be with you, she would be with you. So leave her alone. She’s not worth it.”
He says it louder than he means. He says it and James stands still, thinking of what he has just heard and slowly digesting it. When he replies, Sirius has intuited that he won’t agree. That he won’t give up. They’ve known each other for years, James is his best friend, his brother. His partner in every antic possible. In seven years never, not even once, has Sirius seen him give up.
“You know, Sirius? You’re an idiot. You’re a complete idiot, and what you’ve just said is complete idiocy. Because I love her, you know? Even if she doesn’t love me. So she will always be worth it. Always.”
